Richard G. Lugar Distinguished Student Leadership Award

The Distinguished Student Leadership Award is an award given by the Richard G. Lugar Center for Tomorrow's Leaders recognizing an outstanding high school student leader who has demonstrated excellence in leadership. Leadership may be demonstrated through traditional school activities, work responsibilities, community involvement, church-related activities, and family commitment. The Lugar Center seeks to recognize the accomplishments of youth leaders and endeavors to encourage and support potential leaders.


The inaugural winner of the 2008 Distinguished Student Leadership Award was Miss Katie Felix.  Katie is an extraordinary student leader.  To name just a few of her leadership activities,

she is her senior class vice-president, a co-founder of her school's civics club, a Hoosier Girls State delegate, a varsity tennis player, a 4-H Junior leader, and she was integral to launching a harp program at her high school.

She is a student who leads by example through her upstanding personal conduct, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence.  Katie truly embodies the spirit of leadership that Senator Lugar as shown throughout his many years representing Indiana.

Award Presentation and Recognition

The Distinguished Student Leadership Award will be presented by Senator Lugar at the 2009 Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders, which will be hosted by the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, December 12, 2009. The recipient is welcome to make a short acceptance speech during the main program of the 2009 Lugar Symposium. The recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award will also be recognized with a $500 monetary award.

Criteria

● Have attended the 2008 Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders.

● Have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. (on 4.0 scale).

● Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability.

● Have a proven commitment to serving others.

● Submit an official high school transcript.

● Be available to receive the award at the 2009 Lugar Symposium.

Selection

The Distinguished Student Leadership Award recipient will be selected from among a pool of candidates who are Indiana high school student leaders. Selection will be based on the recipient's leadership and service experience, recommendation form, academic record, and a written essay.

The applicant must send all the required documents to the Richard G. Lugar Center for Tomorrow's Leaders. The required documents are the following:
