In 1977, Senator Richard G. Lugar founded the Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders to increase the awareness of current national and international issues among Indiana’s future leaders. Since its inception, the Symposium’s home has been the University of Indianapolis campus. Senator Lugar invites each Indiana high school to select two outstanding students from the junior class to participate in the Symposium. Over 15,000 Hoosier high school students in all have attended the Symposium, which is held in December of each year.
Senator Lugar serves as the keynote speaker and provides students a generous amount of time at the end of his message to ask questions on issues important to them. The day also includes a photo of the Senator with students from each of the Indiana counties represented and student sessions featuring speakers debating critical current events. Past topics of debate have included the following: U.S. Leadership in the World, Iraq, Energy Security, Immigration, Media Responsibility, Global Warming, and Truthfulness. Adults who accompany the high school students also attend Senator Lugar’s keynote address and follow a separate schedule with current events sessions. Senator Lugar addresses questions from adults in a separate session.
